What’s New ????

Hi y’all !!

Wow, time flies when you are busy running a business. :{  I have a hard time keeping up with everything that is going on around here.  New fabrics, tools, notions, patterns & books arrive every week.  Too many to list everything here on the website.  Give me a call or send me an email & I will be happy to share more info with you & shoot more pictures for you if necessary.

I hope y’all have signed up for the monthly e-Newsletter, it has info about new ideas, merchandise and events in it.  I do that once a month, unfortunately more current than this poor neglected website.  So look at the side bar to your right on the screen and sign up for the newsletter.

If you are an Edyta Sitar fan, you are going to love her new collection, Blue Sky.  We are now carrying all her patterns and books.  Her new collection, Blue Sky is being released by Andover Fabrics in June.  Our order is in and as soon as they ship I will let you know, so watch FB for the announcement.

Our Row By Row Block – Part 2

Our Row by Row Block – Part 2

As with everything in life, there are twist and turns of the unexpected.  Every time you think you have it all together, something comes along to make you rethink your plan.

Ann and I designed our Row by Row Experience block and were excited about it.  I made up the prototype, which I posted earlier. (see Row by Row Experience – Our Row Block)   I liked it !!!  I hung it up in the shop to generate interest.  One evening, my trusty husband threw the first monkey wrench.  He didn’t like the fabric choice for the center squares. :{    WHAT !?!?!?!!   OK, OK ………… sometimes he has good ideas, so I reassessed.  I made up another prototype with a different  fabric in the center squares.   What a difference that made !!  That’s amazing, only one fabric change and it looks like a different pattern.  Everything is exactly the same, except for the center squares.

I ask others that came in the shop what they thought,  and the line was drawn.  So I put it to my FB friends to wade in on the decision.  WOW !!   It was a land slide toward the second prototype.  Who knew !!!  It looks like we will make up kits for our Row by Row Experience block in at least 2 fabric combinations, maybe even 3.  It’s looking like another center square contender is in the making……………….. so stay tuned !

My favorite is still the first one I made.   I think it has interesting movement.  It keeps your eye moving around in the block.    The second one I made is bright and has more “pop”.  It is much more defined and linear.  It looks “simpler”.     What are your thoughts ?

Stormy Night in Medina

Stormy Night in Medina

It’s Monday night, after Mother’s Day weekend.  I hope ya’ll had a nice Mother’s Day.  Mother Nature is kicking up her heels tonight !!!  It got quite dark early.  The wind is howling, it’s been pouring rain off and on for about two hour so far.  Constant lightening strikes across the dark sky and the thunder rolls across the sound waves.  In a way it’s cozy, safe here in the little farm house out of the weather, while the wind pounds the rain against the windows.  I’m so glad to be in here and not out there. 🙂

So tonight, I thought I would share with you some more  things to do with fabrics.  Fabric is such a versatile medium.  It can be the clothes on our back.  It can be a quilt to keep us warm, a kitchen helper, curtains for privacy & decorating.  It can be an art piece, a gift or a flag/banner.  The uses of fabrics are limited only by your imagination.  I love to see others creativity and imagination.

Here are two local ladies who ventured out of their “norm” for sewing and made these fun and easy jackets.  The pattern is “A Little Somethin’ Jacket”, by Karen Nye of CNT Pattern Co..  It’s a great pattern, quick and easy  to make.  One of these ladies has made it at least 3 times.  Once in flannel (great for cool spring evenings)long sleeved, once in a beautiful batik and the one in this picture.  Thanks for sharing ladies 🙂  I have one cut out of a grey flannel for myself, can’t wait to get it sewn up and wear it !!

Another basic but useful thing to do with all the beautiful fabrics out there are table runners.  They can be just decorative, or you can add insulation (like Insul-Brite, or a couple of layers of cotton batting) to the inside to use as a big hot pad for the hot dishes you serve your meals in.  This fun and attractive table runner is perfect to grace your breakfast table or coffee table.  Easy to do !!!  I took the panel, hemmed all the sides and did a pretty decorative machine stitch around the hem.  Voila !!  Instant style !!  Makes a great hostess gift too.

I am a Tea lover.  Anything tea !!  I love the ritual of sipping soothing tea while visiting with friends or family.  I love curling up with a nice cup of tea and reading or sewing on something.  I love tea pots, I have a collection of about 200 (some them displayed at Little Cottage Quilt Shop).  I also have a collection of antique tea cups and saucers.  I love all the paraphernalia that accompanies tea.  I love tea books and tea cook books.  So when I got this darling tea fabric, I just had to make a table runner out of it.  The table runner is a modified “10 Minute Table Runner”The pattern is free for the asking at the Cottage.

DSC_0439

This table runner is an insulated one for those hot dishes you set on the table filled with your deliciously prepared foods for those you love.  I pieced the top together, sandwiched Insul-Brite between that and a coordinating print.  I quilted it on my machine, a quick “stitch in the ditch” and around the saying blocks.   I still have to put the red binding on it tonight.  Then it’s being dropped in the mail tomorrow for  my daughter. 🙂

I hope I have inspired you a little to use your imagination and explore many avenues of discovery with fabrics !!!

Row by Row Experience – Our Row Block

Here it is !!  After a lot of pencil & paper work, and computer program anxiety.  After auditioning a lot of fabric, spread all over the cutting table.   Ann and I finalized the design for our Row Block for the Row by Row Experience.

I made up the prototype, and here it is:

DSC_0778

I have to put the finishing touches on the pattern.  I learned a lot making the prototype and will share all the tips with you.

We are going to make up kits like this one.  Or you can pick out fabrics of your choosing to make it up.  Patterns and kits will be available July 1, 2014.  The pattern is free for the asking.  Please only 1 pattern per person and you must ask for it at the shop.

Our  Fabric Plates  are also here and available for  immediate  purchase.  ($5.99 ea)  The Plate measures  7 1/4″ X 3 1/2″ printed on a piece of  8″ X 4 1/2″  100% Organic Sateen Cotton.  They are sew much fun to collect.  Sew them on to a bag, a jacket, a quilt.  Or piece them all together for a quilt top or back.  How about making a wall hanging for your sewing room showing all the shops you have visited!  The possibilities are endless !
